New Jersey Portrait Photographer | A Dose of Inspiration

September 08, 2013  •  3 Comments

Every once in a while, my two worlds collide and I get to take pictures of someone who came into my life through education.  This stunning young woman is the perfect example of that.  I knew her when she was a prepubescent middle schooler.  With her auburn hair and sprinkles of freckles across her cheeks, she was the kind of student that made you happy you became an educator.  The kind of girl you want your daughter to be like when she grows up.  Ironically, I never taught her.  She never once was in my classroom.  But her spirit is so enveloping, her resolve to achieve is so inspiring, her presence is such a positive force of energy,  you just want to be in the same room with her so you can one day say you were in the presence of greatness.

I know when you look at these pictures you will see a blithe, affable, stunning young woman who has no more worries on her mind then how to make best use of those 140 characters to convey her emotions of the day.

Oh, can appearances be deceiving.

This gorgeous carefree wood sprite is really...a warrior.

She has fought battles that some will go their entire lives never once meeting.  She battles day in and day out against enemies that large burly hairy grown men would cower away from.  She is, in essence, one of the most amazingly awe-inspiring astonishingly able people I have ever met.

She is the face of cystic fibrosis.

When you are fighting your daily battles with your own personal demons and you are in need of dose of inspiration to get you through your day, just think of her and be glad that one day...she will be the leader of our country.  Or the doctor to cure CF.  Or the cause of world peace.  She hasn't figured it out yet.  She's got those 140 characters to update before she decides.

To show your gratitude to this young woman for all the good she has brought and will continue to bring to our world, jump on over to her website and donate a few bucks in her honor.  Just think of it as an investment.  In our future.

Hi Bonnie,
I actually wrote to you yesterday, but, unlike Mara, I can be a computer klutz so I lost my message! You gave all of us who love and admire Mara a terrific gift with your poignant comments and awesome pictures. You surely captured her unique spirit!

We have been blessed with many folks who support us in endless ways and you have definitely joined that special pack! Knowing we have teachers like you who really see & value our children gives me optimism for Mara and her generation.

God bless you!
Sincerely, Pat Cray

Dear Bonnie,
You certainly do a mother’s heart good… Thank you so much for your eloquent thoughts and for these gorgeous pictures of our Mara. What a BEAUTIFUL birthday gift for her!!!! (Today is Mara’s birthday—did you know that?) It is impossible for me to believe that 17 years ago today, I had a tiny newborn girl… Time goes so fast! Thank you for capturing Mara’s beauty and spirit so vividly in these photos. We will treasure them always. It is by the support and kindness of those around us that we are energized to climb that next mountain.
Love,
Sharon

Dear Bonnie,
Oh, boy. This situation is obviously in need of a HUGE thank you, but I don’t know where to begin! I’ll do the best I can, but bear with me!
You know, when you have CF, you’re always hearing “It’s your fight”. But I recently found out that this is not true. CF is a bear, one that you can only fight if you have enough incentive. You can’t just do it for yourself, but rather for the people you know and love.
My best memories are from the days when I got to meet and coexist with extraordinary people, such as yourself. Your immense kindness and passion for your craft are so uplifting that I now have a brand new reason to be brave on a day when I’m facing something that is all but insurmountable—CF-related or not!
So you have not only given me some beautiful pictures (the kind that I can show to my kids years from now and say “Hey, look! I used to be pretty before I had you all!) but you have also given me something to remember during tough times. And when the worst has happened and I’m stuck in the aftermath, that’s exactly what I need: a beautiful memory from the past, and a reminder of a better future.
Thank you for giving me another reason!
Much love,
Mara
